I’m always surprised at the number of people who first come to me about the problems their experiencing with the Yips – either with their putting, their chipping or their longer shots. It must account for around half of all the people who contact me. And the number looking for help with their chipping Yips almost equals the number suffering with their putting. I have to tell you that the emails I receive from people about their Yips are often pretty traumatic. That makes it all the more satisfying when I help them overcome their problem with these golf hypnosis recordings.
So what are the Yips and is it physical, neurological or in the mind? Well, for a start, I’ve helped many people with their yips and, thus far, I haven’t worked with anyone who has an actual physical or neurological impediment that directly causes their Yips. Now, I’m not saying that there aren’t people out there with physical or neurological reasons for their problems, just that I don’t come across them. So it’s most likely to be in the mind and something you can change with the help of techniques like hypnosis and NLP.
Now what do we know about the yips and where does it come from? Well for most people it just seems to creep up on them. Often it happens the first time, just when it really matters, when they’re feeling a high levels of emotion and stress, maybe a putt to win a competition, maybe with a few more people than usual watching them. And they miss a shot, it could be for any one of a thousand different reasons, but they mess up a shot, miss an easy putt or duff a chip. They suddenly feel angry, embarrassed or maybe just downright stupid. Whatever it is, the combination of feelings locks the memory of that shot to those feelings and the seed of the Yips is sown.
It’s a bit like the way a phobia starts out. A lady I know well fell out of a boat into a lake when she was a child and was quickly rescued and, to her surprise, survived happily if rather wet to tell the tale. Ever since that time, whenever she sees a lake or a river or the sea, she unconsciously links it to that original experience and feels all the fear and emotion again. Not only does she feel bad when that happens, it also reinforces her fear of water and the cycle of fear escalates upwards.
Now doesn’t that sound like most people’s experience of the yips, even if they can’t actually consciously pinpoint the original traumatic event? They have one bad experience at a critical time and they start worrying about playing that shot again. That makes them feel worse, so they fear the next shot even more. You can see the same thing happening with people who struggle to hit shots over water, or have a hole or course they “just can’t play”. If you need any more proof, think about someone you know who shanks his shots from time to time. You’d think it was a life and death experience!

Treating it in that way allows you to rapidly learn to get over it and see your old yip problem as something that used to happen to someone else – someone from your past. There’s a fun element too with you taking your seat in your own private grandstand on a wonderful golf course somewhere in your imagination. Yes, I know that sounds a bit odd, but your imagination knows no bounds. This is very powerful stuff.

There are some things we do in life that frankly seem ridiculous and embarrass us deeply. And to have a profound fear of something that’s in no way life threatening is simply unreasonable. If you kept doing something that silly and annoying, over and over, week in and week out, in other areas of your life, then pretty soon you’d lose your temper with yourself and big switch would turn off in your brain. You’d probably say something like “Enough is Enough” very emphatically.
